Maugeri Medical Institute
Year: 1992-1996 - Location: Pavia, Italy
Medical Centre with 380 beds, dialysis unit, operating theatres, outpatients’ department, diagnostic, therapeutic and general services, kitchen, canteen; 500.000 ft².
The clinic is designed with an extended floor plate covered in green, which hosts outpatient and hospital services, and 4 floors of wards, double-body buildings, which stand out from the base. The plan is made by a square grid, marked, as the adjacent university buildings designed by De Carlo, by stair towers in pre-painted aluminum 7.20 x7.20 m coming out of the gutter line.
The ward wings, built with the double room concept, spread from the stairs cores following orthogonal axes. The 190 rooms are equipped with private bathroom and double exterior openings, inclined at 45° with respect to the facades. To the original functions (conference and research facilities) have been added laboratories, NMR, PET, radiation therapy, surgery rooms.
